What would be some great ways to cook dove wrapped in bacon;while camping in my local mountains?
I have a couple of fresh dove and it is time to wrap them in bacon… Many more will hopefully be shot down with my high powered air rifle,in the wee morning hours to come… How would you cook dove;when camping??? Also, can I cook crow the same way??? Thanks for all of the info… James

you just answered your own question. just wrap ‘em in bacon, poke ‘em on a stick, add a little seasoned salt and grill over the coals. and yes, you can do crow the same way. good luck hunting crows with your “high powered air gun” your gonna need it. River Rat
I go with river rat with this one, you can also tightly wrap the bacon wrapped doves in aluminium foil and shove them into the hot ashes surrounding the fire, this slow cooks it and helps keep the juices in the meat, yum! just make sure to look once in a while, because you can easily burn it this way. when cooking on a spit, you need to be able to judge the distance of the meat away from the fire so you don’t burn the outside and leave the inside raw.
you do this by placing your hand above the fire and counting how long you can hold your hand there without having to pull your hand away, once you find a distance you can hold your hand at for 4-5 seconds and needing to move it away, put the spit to that height and it should be done in a 20-25 minutes, but check the heat once in a while and turn the meat to make sure it cooks evenly, people also have different resistance to heat, so cooking time may vary a little..
you can also get a small camping cookset and just cook it on the frying pan? just put the pan on a hot rock and you’ll be in business, it’s kinda hard to keep bacon on a camping trip though, since it rots unlike other preserved meats.
I never ate crow before, but I believe you could do the same. stormgale89
You might want to delete this question. It is against federal law to shoot dove with an air rifle, or any kind of rifle, for that matter. The only legal means of taking these federally regulated migratory birds is a shotgun that holds 3 shells or less.
If you get caught, you’re going to lose your hunting license (if you have one). Also, unless you’re somewhere in the deep South or a foreign country, it’s probably not dove season right now. roadhunter
My personal preference is to wrap the breast around a seeded jalapeno half. Then wrap a piece of bacon around the breast and pin it in place with a toothpick. Put the breasts in a container and pour enough of your favorite Italian salad dressing over them to cover them. Put the container in the refrigerator overnight. Take them to camp still in the container. Grill them over coals until done. They are wonderful. You won’t be sorry.
I’ve never eaten crow but I would think they could be cooked the same way. Somehow I have an idea that crow is not all that good but you can eat it if you want to. It won’t hurt you but you may not like the taste. CIH(Ret)
this is the third time i’m telling you this, hunting dove with an air rifle is illegal,
this is also the 3rd time your getting reported to Y! Dave
