Should camping out at store parking lots be banned?

Jordan asked:

Why do stores (such as Best Buy) allow stuff like this? On the news, they showed a Best Buy employee making predictions of how early people will start lining up to camp out on the store grounds on Thanksgiving Day. Some stores/malls have signs prohibiting loitering, and so do some city ordinances. Wouldn’t camping out on store grounds constitute loitering? In my opinion, people shouldn’t be allowed on the parking lot until a half-hour before the store opens.

It’s private property. The store can do what they want. I’d rather have people do that than drive around and around and around in cars and then all head for the parking lot all at once causing a massive traffic jam that is deadlocked for hours and resulting in many collisions. Bonkers!

under your plan there would be major traffic jams all over town on friday. stores aren’t going to turn away customers if they don’t have to. especially this year. Golden

What are you upset that YOU CAN’T? It’s the STORE’S PROPERTY let them handle it how they want. I am sick of the Govt trying to decide how a PRIVATE BUSINESS can do it’s business. If they are discriminating that is one thing, but if they let anyone who shows up come in and camp out then that’s how it goes. They ALLOW it because most of those people are there for the sales and SPEND MONEY. They don’t allow it year round. sgoldperson

Loitering is hanging around an area without a specific agenda or purpose. Kids hanging around in front of a circle K for 4 hours after school is loitering, customers lining up to get the best possible deal isn’t.

If people did this on any other day, they would probably be told to move along, but since it’s black friday, the store, the owner of the store’s lease (usually the mall the store is located in) and the local security and police know why they are there and that they aren’t loitering. Patrick B

Why would it be banned? It’s private property and it’s in the best interest of the store to allow people to camp out there. Everybody wins. jakflak
