Not free, but Mt Charleston is a great place to camp, hike, picnic, etc. And, it's only 35 miles up I-95 from Las Vegas.

The View is awesome and the old growth trees are very impressive.

It runs about 30 degrees cooler up there, than in the valley. >We took some friends up to Mt Charleston in June, it was 90 degrees in the city and 60 up on the Mt. They sure were glad to see the jackets I had stashed in the trunk :))

I suggest you checkout the Ghost town of Calico on the California side of the Nevada-California border.

Either that or you can go camping in Zions in Utah, also lots of fun! Eric M D

I'll be making my 3rd trip in just a few months to Navajo Lake Utah next weekend. It is about 30 miles uphill from Cedar City. It is 400 miles round trip from Vegas. Took us a little over 3 hours one way. Did it on one tank of gas too....just.

You better hurry it is at high altitude and is already flirting with the upper 30's some nights. It still gets up around the 70's during the day.

Beautiful lake. Tons of aspen. Hiking & biking. The trout fishing is some of the best around.

The camp officially closed on 9/4 but I called the Ranger station and they said that just means the camp host left for the year. So no more running water in the bathroom and you won't be able to buy firewood but the camp is still allowed to be used. Even if it was closed there is tons of shoreline that you can just set up on anywhere. Fire restrictions have been lifted so as long as you are camping 200 feet from shore and have a fire ring you are good to go.

The lake and camp is in National Forest so no shooting but there is 1000's of acres around it of nothing. I am sure if you know the laws then some of this land must be ok to shoot/hunt in.

I highly reccomend it!

Feel free to email me if you want more info. atsun1741

Right over the hill from Las Vegas is a whole different world. Pine trees, log cabins & granite peaks are less than an hours drive form the Strip. Wild Horses, Burros & Elk can be seen roaming these wilderness lands on any given day. Some of the ancient Bristlecone Pine trees can also be found up on this range. Many Vegas locals escape to this destination during scorching summer months.

Several great resorts offer lodging and dining. There are also several campgrounds available with some primitive spots nearby. e a
