How do I make frozen ‘hobo’ dinners for hiking/camping for 4 & how long will the meat stay frozen?

JD asked:

I’m hiking 12 miles and want the frozen ground beef to thaw throughout the day (so I can cook it at night), but am not sure if it will (or thaw too fast). I will start in the morning with it being completely frozen. I’m hiking in Florida in April.

I would recommend you go for dried foods that can be re-hydrated. The risk of the beef going sour is high in very warm temperatures and modern dried foods are very passable – the miltary use them after all. Huge

if you freeze it before you leave, put it in a ziplock bag (type of container) and keep it tightly packed in with the rest of your goods, it should stay fine. infact, i will probably be partially frozen still. If you are building a campfire and using pots to cook, just throw it in there, but be prepared for it to take a little bit longer to actually heat up if it is indeed still frozen. If by chance it has thawed, i am sure it will still be cold enough, and you wont have anything to worry about. cwrazien

I agree with Huge – the risk is simply too high, and the last thing you want on your trip is someone getting sick from eating tainted meat.

You may consider taking frozen meat for the first night, keeping it frozen until mid- to late afternoon and then thawing it.

For the rest of the trip, consider dehydrated food. Have a look at sandriki

    HAM AND BEANS

    1 medium onion, diced
    1 stalk celery, diced
    1/2 cup diced carrots
1 can ready to serve chicken broth
1 15 oz. can Great Northern beans
    1 6 oz. can HormelĀ® Ham

Cook the first 4 ingredients together for 15 min. Then add the beans & ham and simmer another 15 min. Twilight E.K.
