How can I decorate my preschool classroom in a camping theme?
I teach preschool, and I have four year olds. The theme for next semester in my class is camping and the outdoors and I need ideas of ways to incorporate that into my classroom. My class is kind of small, but I need any ideas anyone has to help. I love my kids and really want to make this as fun and special or them as I can!!!

One idea: Make a campfire.
To make a 3-D campfire have each of the children paint a paper towel tube with brown paint. When the paint dries, glue 4 of the tubes into a square shape for the base of the campfire. Then glue the remaining tubes up towards the center, like a pyramid. When the glue is dry and cool, allow the children to glue pieces of yellow, red and orange tissue paper to the wood, representing the fire. This can be used in dramatic play as a real “fire”. Watch out, it’s hot! Also, a good time to talk about fire safety, cooking with fire…
get campfire pictures, maybe bulletin borders that has leaves.any stuff that has to do with outdoors. trees, rivers, water. etc..
A circle of pup tents or tee-pees for starts (sticks, sheets and a little rope will work fine). Let the kids draw the wild animals of the forest on extra large sheets of paper for the walls. A fake fire with small logs and a flame of colored cellophane. And at least one 8 foot tall paper tree where the kids can put their favorite birds in the branches. Ask the parents if they can bring in things of interest they found in a forest or wooded area.
Of course it wouldn’t hurt find somebody to sit around the “camp fire” and tell the kids more about camping and the natural world too.
You might want to make your reading corner out of a little pup-tent. If you put a kid size sleeping bag in the pup-tent a child can lie down while reading (and still be visible- which is always a good thing.
You can also use one or two camp chairs (especially if you get the kid size ones) for them to sit in while they read.Add this to the campfire idea mentioned by another reader and you have a whole camp site.
Check with your local free-cycling group (there are a lot of these groups on Yahoo Groups) for free sources for some of these items. You can also go to Goodwill, or Thrift Shops. That way you can amaze the children without breaking the bank.
If you are allowed to, you can make some trees out of twisted butcher paper, (large carpet rolls are also an alternative). Then you could fasten stuffed animals like raccoons or owls in the tree’s branches.
You could also try to find some bulletin board sets that go with your theme to add continuity to the room. The animal friends calendar set below is one possibility. And you could post the kids names on the bears in canoes accents under a heading that reads something like
Miss _____________’s Happy Campers
Good luck with the new school year!
you can make little fires out of red and orange tissue paper and then surround them with brown pieces of paper and put them on their tables or the window sills or where ever. or you could get like a few flashlights and pet them around the room.
hope you think of some sweet stuff!
We actually set up a full sized tent in the corner and added camp chairs and sleepin bags. Also, the fire and trees. WE read, picniced. and even used it for naptime, a few each day.
Start with saving the planet. The rain forest is a good way to have you kids to think about the earth being safe for years to come. Teach them about the layers and put a tent in a small area and create the layers of a canopy. Create the animals that live there and talk about how man’s destroying of the rain forest eliminates life for everything and everyone. The rain forest is a good example of reality and awareness to child and family. Now you would be able to the children to think at this age and community awareness. Also, have the parents join in to start a beautification recycling compost project. All of you can make a recycling compost bin for waste to use as fertilizer for a flowers and vegetables. Start with some of the foods from school or home. I know this works, it did for me and it is fun for future economist and farmers. Also, you kids will learn about other children around the world. Good luck!
