Lake Tahoe is nice, but it's crowded in the summer. In Nevada, there's Walker Lake and Topaz Lake. Both of them are closer to Las Vegas, than Tahoe. The California-Nevada border runs through Topaz, so you fish with either a California or Nevada license.

Inside California, there's Lake Crowley, in the Owens Valley, north of Bishop. There are plenty of places off Hwy 395 to fish and camp. Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierras is a popular area. TFIA

I've learned this camping you can take some hamburger potoes onions bring some pepper and salt you make like pattys oh I forgot u can use bell peppers too put spices or what ever you want on it place the meat on foil add cut up pototes with or without skin on them. Place it on very low heat so if ur using a camp fire put it on wood that's like low I'm sorry it was along time ago I did this when I was 16 ok for a snack you can make banana boats you pill only the top part off leave the side and bottom skins save the top part. You dig out the middle of the banana and put chocolate bar pices in the midlle on the sides of the chocolate you put small marshmellows. You place the top part the skin back onto the banana wrap that in foil let it cook for about 2 to 3 mins just so it melts on the coals the part of the fire that's dying but still there. So with the meat if you have time let it cook for about 35 to 40 mins just open and check to see if its still pink with the banna boats just check and see if its melted oh I forgot when you dig out the middle part u can put that back on top to or eat it. If ur cooking over a firse you can have bacon and eggs in a brown bag layer the bottom of the bag with bacon then crack 2 eggs over this fold the top part over. Find a stick take all the bark off and stick it through the bag hang it over the fire and let it cook I promise it works. I use to camp and I've learned a lot. So with the hambuger and eggs just season that the way you want I hope this works shygirl_funny

Dry ice is compressed carbon dioxide that has been solidified. You cannot make it yourself without very expensive special equipment. Look in your phone book for a company that sells gases such as oxygen, acetylene, nitrogen, helium, propane, etc.. They can sell it to you. It usually comes wrapped in paper. You must handle it with gloves or the temperature of the ice being so cold, will literally freeze your skin and it will feel as if you got burned. It only holds up for so long, and you will have to retard its melting by storing it in a very cold freezer. Shafter

For a family camping lantern nothing can beat a Coleman fuel powered lantern they have several types that burn fuels, unleaded gas, propane, kerosene. The battery option Coleman lanterns are competitive and have just as many options and power levels they also have rechargeable and solar powered units.

I have the duel mantel propane and unleaded fuel models and have never had problems with either. On the propane model I broke the glass and replaced that with a metal screen and it works great. A note of safety here gas fueled lanterns are not safe in tents they produce carbon monoxide gas.

For your tents the options are limitless in the battery power units I would look for the most candle power you can afford in the lightest weight and go for the rechargeable either plug in or wind up or solar, batteries cost a fortune chris w

You can't make dry ice at home.
It requires special equipment.
You can buy dry ice, or freeze water in plastic soft drink bottles. Irv S

I wouldn't suggest going secluded as a "rookie" camper. Try some non secluded areas first using what you think you would need in a secluded area. Doing this a few times will help preventing you from ending up in serious situations in a secluded area. When you are ready to get a bit more secluded and backcountry you are about 50 miles away from the Appalachian Trail. It's a little rough in PA but not bad. lizincali
